Smeatharpe Stadium sits at the far west end of the former Upottery Airlfield. Construction of the airfield began in 1943, and was concluded early the following year. The airfield played a significant role in World War II. Some thirty years later, in the winter of 1973-74, Smeatharpe Stadium was created, and since opening on 7 April 1974, it has staged many events, including being one of the nation’s leading Stock Car Racing venues.
